I wanted a super dry, but realistic sound, which would give you the feeling of being surrounded by snow, snow and even more snow.
At first I went outside to a snowy field to record some guide tracks with a Rode NTG2 and my Olympus LS14. Apart from the guide track, I got some beautiful, crunchy, low-end sounds that I kept in the final mix.
The major part of this was recorded at my snow-footsteps-foley-pit (no rice-bag involved! ;)).
I used a Neumann TLM 103 into a TLA Tube amp and a NTG2 into RND Portico II Channel. Then both into my Fireface 800. The specific sound was achieved by editing, and layering.
Enjoy!
