Jump Sound Effects

Jump sound effects, real and cartoon. On the real side, people jumping and landing on wood, gravel, concrete and metal, recorded on foley stages with proper shoes and proper weight. On the game side, the platformer jump, a springy boing or a rising blip. Different jobs. Both need to land on exactly the right frame.

A real jump is really a pair of sounds: the push off and the Land, with a bit of cloth and breath in between. The footstep libraries record both across their surfaces, next to the walks and the Run cycles, plus the Scuff of a shoe catching the ground, so a character's whole movement set can come from the same recordings. The game libraries go the other way. Platformer jumps and bounces in retro and cartoon styles, with voices to grunt or giggle on take-off. A realistic jump wants the landing louder than the push. A cartoon jump can be pure spring. Animators and platformer developers reach for these, and so do foley editors filling in a chase.
