COMMUTE SFX follows the everyday journey through public transport in Italy: the vaulted concourses of Firenze Santa Maria Novella and Pisa Centrale, the inside of a regional train as it pulls out under the conductor’s whistle, electric trams sliding past on the street, lifts announcing each floor, and escalators squeaking their way up under the weight of tourists.
The station material is the backbone. Fifteen takes across two working Italian stations, most of them between three and nine minutes and one running over fifteen, capture the whole texture of a terminus: footsteps and rolling suitcases on stone, public address announcements echoing off the roof, arrivals and departures. These are long enough to sit under a scene from beginning to end without looping.
Around them sits the rest of the commute. Train interiors with door cycles, whistles and horns; trams passing with bell, bus horn and city traffic behind them; a full set of lift movements with doors, buttons and floor announcements, including one in 4-channel Ambisonic; escalators from a single start-up to a busy squeaking concourse; and an underground car park with the deep, reflective hum of a concrete deck.
Inside the Collection
The library is organised into UCS-compliant categories to streamline your workflow:
• Train Stations (15 files, 1h 36m) – The core of the library. Firenze Santa Maria Novella in seven takes and Pisa Centrale in eight, covering quiet stretches and busy peaks, platform edge and concourse, with announcements, crowds, luggage and rolling stock in the background.
• Train Interiors (5 files, 25m) – Long interior ambiences of a regional train: departing with the conductor’s whistle and horn, arriving and stopping with door open and close cycles, and steady running ambience. Plus a close door-opening alarm beep over idling engine.
• Elevators (8 files, 9m) – A modern lift with button presses, door cycles, travel and recorded floor announcements from ground to fifth and back, plus an old lift with its own creaks and a 4-channel Ambisonic take of a full cycle.
• Trams (7 files, 4m) – Electric trams passing in street ambience, with bell, bus and car horns, a departing bus and a motorbike crossing the frame.
• Escalators (5 files, 4m) – Start-up, a ride going up, and squeaking escalator ambiences with and without passing tourists.
• Car Park & Traffic (3 files, 14m) – A shopping mall underground car park, and wet highway traffic recorded both from the roadside and from inside a car in the rain.
