Wave Sound Effects

Wave sound effects from a harbour lapping quietly to storm surf pounding the rocks. Gentle waves roll up the sand and drag the pebbles back. Big ones crash. Most were recorded on real coastlines around the world, and there are designed water waves as well, for transitions and magic.

Waves come in sets, and the gap between them matters. A calm Beach with long pauses between waves feels lazy and warm, while a stormy Sea with no break at all feels dangerous. The pebble drag after each wave is a lovely detail that's hard to fake, and close recordings catch it best. When a wave smashes into something, a Splash on top sells the hit. Loopable recordings let a seaside scene run as long as it needs. Designed waves are a different thing entirely, used to sweep between scenes.
