Medieval Sound Effects

Medieval sound effects for castles and battlefields. Swordsmen duelling for real with blades ringing off shields. Knights charging on horseback, battle cries rising behind them. Mud and steel, and plenty of it recorded with actors outdoors. Then the quieter days: taverns, church bells, a blacksmith at the anvil and animals out in the fields.

Medieval sound is mostly metal and voices. A real Sword on a Shield has a duller, heavier clank than film usually gives it, and the recordings of trained swordsmen here keep that honest weight. Battles are built in layers: shouting fighters, hooves, weapons and the odd scream, often supplied as separate stems so you can push the charge or the clash. Town life fills in the rest. A busy tavern, and a smith hammering away. In games, the castle and village ambiences run under exploration while the combat sounds take over in a fight.
