Engine Rev sound effects for the moment someone plants their foot and the car goes nowhere. Muscle cars burbling, then roaring. Supercars shrieking up to the limiter. An outboard motor on a lake, and a jet spooling up before it moves an inch. Some were recorded on real film sets, revved for the camera.

A rev is a short story. Blip the throttle and the engine snaps up and hangs for a moment before falling back to idle. It's how a car shows its character before it moves, which is why most vehicle libraries record a set of them, from gentle blips to long holds at high revs. Cut a rev between an Engine Start and an Acceleration and you've built the classic standing start. The exhaust side gives you the bark. Inside the car, the same rev sounds tighter and more mechanical.
