Thunder sound effects from a sharp crack overhead to a long roll across the valley. Close strikes that make you flinch. Distant rumbles that just sit on the horizon. Plenty come with rain, out in a back garden or under a tin shed roof, and some are heard from indoors, muffled through the glass.

Close thunder and distant thunder are almost different sounds. Up close it's a crack with a fast attack, the nearest thing nature has to a gunshot, followed by a rumble that rolls away. Far off, the crack is gone and only the low roll remains, and nothing does dread better. Timing with Lightning matters too: a flash and a crack together means the storm is right overhead, and a gap means it's miles away. Interior recordings suit bedrooms and cars, where the storm needs to feel close but outside. A Rain bed underneath and some wind from the Storm recordings make a full night of weather. Horror has always known that.
