Steering Wheel Sound Effects

Steering Wheel sound effects from inside real cars. Hands sliding round a leather rim and the creak of a grip tightening. The wheel turned from lock to lock, with the cabin quiet around it, recorded in everything from executive saloons to a classic muscle car and an electric city car. Sim racing wheels turn up too. They click.

Steering foley is easy to forget and obvious when it's missing. In a close shot of a driver, the slide of hands on the rim and the little creaks of the wheel sell every turn, especially in an electric car where there's no engine to hide behind. These come from full car recordings, so the wheel sits with the Turn Indicator stalk and the Seatbelt from the same cabin. Racing games use the sim gear recordings for menus and setup screens. Chase scenes cut them in tight on the driver's hands.
