River Sound Effects

River sound effects from a gentle trickle to white water. Mountain rapids crash over the boulders, while wide, slow rivers slide past the bank with birds calling in the trees. Near and far. Some go under the surface with a hydrophone, where a river turns into a deep, rushing roar.

River recordings live or die on distance. Close up, every ripple and splash is there, which suits a character kneeling to drink. Step back and it blurs into a soft wash that sits nicely under dialogue, so the better libraries record the same water from several spots. For bigger drama there's the Waterfall, and smaller water has its own place in Stream and Creek. Loopable takes make them easy to hold under a long scene. Games use them to guide players, since you hear the river before you see it.
