Wood under strain makes a great tension sound. A slow bend holds the moment before the snap, and pitched down it can pass for a ship's hull or an old house settling at night. The wood recordings cover the whole arc, from the creak to the break, across hardwood, plywood and board. Metal does something similar with more ring: the tin folds and crumples, and the magnetic textures rattle and scrape. The designed bends are a different tool. Clean or Distorted, they sit on cuts and title cards and pull the ear forward, and they share a lot with Ping. The zither recordings, all string and wood impacts from a wreck of a thing, suit horror and anything that should sound like it's falling apart.
