Ashtray Sound Effects

Ashtray sound effects, and most of them live inside cars. The little pull-out tray in an old dashboard, snapped open and pushed shut, recorded alongside every other bit of interior foley a car has. Then the smoking side, cigarettes puffed and matches struck. Tiny details, but period films would miss them.

Car libraries that go deep on interior foley record the ashtray along with everything else you can touch from the driver's seat: the Seatbelt, the Handbrake, the windows and the glovebox. That's what makes these useful. Older cars especially have chunky, rattly ashtrays with real character, and a close-up of someone stubbing out a cigarette in a moving car needs exactly that click and slide. The smoking libraries cover the rest of the ritual, from the strike of a match to the last puff. Period dramas and road movies use them most.
