Artillery is mostly about distance. Beside the gun it's a crack and a shove of air, far off it's a dull thump, and under the shell it's a whistle and then nothing good. For period films, the black powder side covers field and naval Cannon fire, with cannonballs hitting water, wood and stone. A Howitzer barrage under a battlefield scene works best kept low and constant, with the odd close Explosion on top as a reminder. You get both kinds of recording to build it from: clean firing with very long tails for making your own space, and designed shots with mechanical parts and debris already layered in.
