MACHINE SHOP SFX is a close-up collection of metalworking sounds captured inside a working machine shop – not a staged set, not a museum, but a floor where the machines are old, the tolerances are tight and every tool has a voice of its own.
The library covers the full working cycle: lathes turning steel, a column drill biting into plate, grinding wheels showering sparks, shears and stamping presses, bending and folding machines. Around them sits the shop’s nervous system – compressed air lines venting and bursting, pneumatic drills, hammers and riveters, cooling fans, compressors and pumps, plus the small mechanical detail that sells a scene: lever mechanisms, knobs, toggle switches, a forklift reversing alarm.
Most sources were recorded simultaneously from two perspectives: a Røde NTG5 shotgun for a tight, dry mono capture and the Tascam Portacapture X8+NTG5 in stereo for width and room. You get both versions of the same take, so you can pick the dry one for hard sync and the wide one for atmosphere, or layer them together. Everything is 32-bit float and mostly 192 kHz, so aggressive pitch-shifting and time-stretching hold up: a lathe motor slows into an engine room, a riveter becomes a weapon mechanism.
Inside the Collection
The library is organised into UCS-compliant categories to streamline your workflow:
• Industrial Machines (38 files, 22m) – The core of the library. Metalworking lathe running, column drill motor and drilling into plate, grinding wheel start-stop and metalwork, manual lever shears, metal stamping presses, pneumatic bending machine, folding machine startup, planer and shearing machine motors, and a wind tunnel fan.
• Pneumatic Tools (26 files, 9m) – Air drills in several sizes, mini drill start and stop, pneumatic air hammer, riveter, and a drill perforating a metal plate. Short, punchy, transient-rich material, ideal for mechanical sound design and weapon layering.
• Compressed Air (24 files, 19m) – Air and gas venting from pipes with and without resonance, blowgun pressure drops, compressed air releases with and without machinery in the background, gas leaks, spray can hiss and balloon deflates. The longest takes in the library after the machines, and the most useful as raw texture.
• Hand & Power Tools (27 files, 14m) – Electric drill into metal with speed changes and start-stop cycles, mitre saw cuts, lathe motor and speed-change levers, box cutter blade, and a worker felling and cutting wood with a chainsaw.
• Fans, HVAC & Pumps (21 files, 17m) – Industrial cooling fan activations, air conditioning and external case fan static noise, air compressor running and with an air leak, boiler heater pump and industrial water pump. Steady-state beds for interiors and machine rooms.
• Mechanical Detail (12 files) – Metal lever and gear mechanisms with creaks, thuds and vibration, a rotating machine knob, and toggle switches on and off. The small Foley that makes a machine feel operated rather than just running.
• Plus – A forklift reverse beep alarm, a diesel supply generator, and a laboratory gyroscope spinning up and down on air pressure at high RPM.
