HARBOUR SFX covers the two faces of a working Italian port. On one side the cargo terminal: straddle carriers and reach stackers lifting containers, reversing alarms carrying across the yard, trucks manoeuvring, a ship passing the quay. On the other the marina: halyards rattling against aluminium masts in the wind, mooring ropes stretching and squeaking under load, water lapping against hulls, a small boat horn from the pier.
Seven of the twenty-nine files are 4-channel Ambisonic AmbiX soundscapes, recorded with a Røde NT-SF1 and a Zoom H3-VR – close to a quarter of the library, and an unusually high proportion for a port collection. A container terminal is a place with real depth: machinery working at two hundred metres, an alarm somewhere behind you, a ship moving along the far quay. Ambisonic captures that geometry intact, so it can be rotated, decoded to binaural or folded to surround rather than fixed to one stereo image.
The takes are long. Most cargo and port ambiences run between three and nine minutes, giving you beds that sit under a scene from start to finish. Recorded in 32-bit float, mostly at 192 or 96 kHz, so crane motors and mast rattles survive heavy pitch-shifting and time-stretching – a container crane slowed down makes an excellent machine hall, cargo lift or ship’s hold.
Inside the Collection
The library is organised into UCS-compliant categories to streamline your workflow:
• Cargo & Container Terminal (7 files, 42m) – The core of the library. Container handling equipment moving and stacking, reversing and warning alarms, trucks, cars and scooters crossing the yard. Five of these are 4-channel Ambisonic AmbiX, including takes of 6, 6 and 8 minutes; two are long stereo perspectives of the same cargo area.
• Marina in Wind (11 files, 23m) – Halyards and rigging rattling against sailboat masts, close and at distance, over howling wind – from a brisk day to a full storm. The signature sound of any moored fleet.
• Port Ambiences (4 files, 21m) – Wider port soundscapes: an eight-minute stereo bed, a cargo ship passing the quay, an Ambisonic B-format port ambience, and an Ambisonic take with motorboats passing, sea waves and people talking on the waterfront.
• Mooring Ropes & Hulls (5 files, 7m) – Close detail of mooring lines stretching, creaking and squeaking under load, with water lapping against the hull. Recorded at 192 kHz / 32-bit float – excellent tension and rigging material well beyond maritime use.
• Boats (2 files) – A pilot boat engine running with water bubbling at the stern, and a small pier ambience with a boat horn.
