Whisper Sound Effects

Whisper sound effects, mostly from the dark side of the room. Ghostly voices just behind your ear, or demonic murmuring in a long forgotten language. In the dungeon recordings, something keeps talking under its breath. Nobody else is there. The gentler kind is here too: wind whispering through leaves, and the hush of a big library where everyone is trying very hard to be quiet.

A whisper works in horror because the ear leans in to catch it, which puts the audience exactly where the scare wants them. It always works. Many of these are performed by real voices, then reversed or smeared with reverb until the words stop making sense. A Ghost rarely speaks clearly, and the ghostly sets lean into that with moans and breathy broken words. In a Horror Game, whispers often sit in the ambience and trigger as the player moves, so they seem to come from the dark rather than the speakers. The library hush is the opposite, real people keeping quiet in a grand old room.
