Railroad Sound Effects

Railroad sound effects from steam to freight. Steam engines at work with their wagons clattering and grinding behind, and freight trains going by. Everyday rail travel is here too, with platforms and carriage interiors, horn blasts and door chimes. For disaster scenes, there are designed railroad collisions built from big metal impacts.

The classic clack of a train comes from its wheels crossing the joints between rails, and the carriage recordings carry plenty of that wheel clatter from the inside. A set of Freight Train recordings was made with a dummy head, for headphones but fine on speakers, which suits a level crossing or a night by the tracks. The steam engines come with platform ambience and the mechanical detail of the Locomotive itself, handy for period drama. When it all goes wrong, the collision libraries stack metal impacts and crashes on a cinematic scale, ready for a derailment.
