Winch Sound Effects

Winch sound effects for hauling something in. On sailing boats the winches work among the rest of the deck gear, recorded from on deck and down near the water, with sail foley and engine starts close by. Off the water, quad bikes and side-by-sides bring their own. Then the machines. Ratchets and chains turn up for workshops and sci-fi rigs.

A winch is a ratchet and a drum working under load. On a Sailboat the winches come in during the manoeuvres, so they sit naturally with the deck ambiences and the water moving around the hull. Tugboats and motor boats bring heavier nautical gear for a harbour scene. On an ATV, a winch is what gets the quad out of a ditch, and the quad libraries have the engines to go with it. The lock and gear sets treat a winch as one mechanism among many, which suits a drawbridge or a portcullis, and the sci-fi machinery takes the same idea up to a hangar door or a cargo lift.
