Distant Sound Effects

Distant sound effects for things happening somewhere else. The noise floor of a city heard from the hills, and trains passing far off at night, fading out into quiet. Then the trouble. Explosions and detonations go off far away, and race cars lap a circuit somewhere out of shot. Sirens and gunfire turn up too, sitting well back where they belong.

Real distance is hard to fake. Reverb and filtering get close, but a sound recorded far away carries the air and the landscape in between, and the city, train and race recordings here were made at a real distance. The trains come freight and Passenger Train alike, from approach to fade-out, with quiet night ambience either side. The race recordings come from a real circuit, with solo and grouped passes and wider soundscapes, and the Stock Car laps have almost no crowd in them. The underwater set is designed, with far-off ambiences and machine resonations. The blasts are designed to sound far off, ready for war films. A far siren under a city bed is a simple way to put a scene at night.
