Brake Sound Effects

Brake sound effects from anything that has to stop. Cars pulling up in traffic and rally cars scrubbing off speed before a corner. Motorbikes skidding on dirt. Steam trains hiss and squeal to a halt, while bikes and scooters squeak to a stop on the pavement. A good brake sound is mostly the tyres and the pads talking, and you can hear both here.

Braking is usually heard rather than seen. A car on screen slows, and the audience needs the squeal or the scrub of rubber to believe it. The pass-by recordings catch real traffic doing exactly that, slowing for junctions on British roads and city streets. Closer in, a Pedal press can lead into the stop, so the foot and the tyres tell the same story. Rally and dirt bike recordings are the dramatic end, all skids and lock-ups. On a Bicycle or a skateboard it's a lighter squeak or the scrape of a heel. Trains are the loudest brakes going, a long metal scream as the carriages slow. Car chases need all of it. So do quiet dramas, where a car stopping outside the house is the whole moment.
